The secret to weight loss is all about calories, not food. As long as you create a caloric deficit by consuming fewer calories than you burn, you will lose weight. This is true no matter what foods you eat.

To help illustrate this point, lets look at an experiment done by Mark Haub, a professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University.

In an attempt to lose weight, he created a caloric deficit by consuming around 1800 calories per day. The interesting part is that his diet consisted of Twinkies, Doritos and Oreo cookies.

Foods that we all know are not healthy. But by the end of the 10 week experiment, the professor had lost 27 pounds, proving that it doesn’t matter what you eat as long as your caloric intake is less than your expenditure.

The Problem With This Type of Diet

Eating a diet that consists of only processed foods is not good for your overall health. A lack of fruits and vegetables can lead to vitamin deficiencies and other health problems.

Solutions for a Healthy Weight Loss Diet

To avoid these potential risks, it is best to focus on eating healthy foods such as lean meats, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and dairy products. As a result you will look better, feel better, and live longer.

At the end of the day, if you want sustainable weight loss you must make lifestyle changes and avoid fad diets that only focus on short term results.

One Last Thing

Yes, you can lose weight by consuming fewer calories. However, all calories are not created equal. A 200 calorie apple is not the same as a 200 calorie candy bar.

They both have completely different macronutrient and micronutrient profiles. This means the apple will provide you with more nutrients and also keep you fuller for longer.

So the question is, do you just want to lose weight? Or do you want to lose weight and improve your overall health?
